I read this post at the beginning of the month and I must say that I agree with Cozy. I agree that the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" is not the greatest song there is. I agree that you can not NOT dance to "December 1963 (Oh What a Night)" by the Four Seasons. Let it also be said that once that song gets into your head, you can not get it out! 15 days I've been singing (and dancing) to that thing.
I too started to think up my own top ten, trying to stay withing certain parameters. I tried to stick with songs that would be considered to be in the genre of rock. I also did not pick any songs done in the past 8 or 9 years because they have not been around long enough to stand the test of time. I agreed whole heartily with one of Cozy's songs and chose another song from one of the same groups she had selected.
This is what I came up with, in no particular order, with the exception of #1, which I truly feel that is the greatest:
1. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
2. The House of the Rising Sun - Animals
3. Nothing Else Matters - Metallica
4. Life's Been Good to me So Far - Joe Walsh
5. On the Turning Away - Pink Floyd
6. Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel
7. Tom Sawyer - Rush
8. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N Roses
9. Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve
10. Come on Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners (Now, say what you will about this choice, but any song that can make me bee bop and sing in the middle of Schlotzsky's , much to the horror and humiliation of my children and the delight of the lady sitting behind us, deserves a spot on my top ten. I love this song. It makes me giddy. It is the greatest one hit wonder of all time!)
Now, at the same time I read the top ten post, Kent and I were in the middle of following this. It is a list of the Big 30 from the last 30. The greastest 30 albums from the past 30 years that have defined a generation of music. They reveal the last album tomorrow morning. It doesn't take a rocket science to figure out that it will be U2's "Joshua Tree". If it's not that then it will be another album by U2. Kent and I were actually able to guess alot of the albums that were included. The last 3 were no brainers, got em in the right order and everything. I have but a few qualms!
I almost lost respect for the entire thing over choice #10. I can not even say the name. I am not a fan. You will never be able to justify the choice to me. Even if you do want to put her on the list, it should not be at such a high ranking position!
I think they over looked Tesla's "Five Man Acoustical Jam". After this album was released and became a huge success, everyone started doing the acoustical thing. MTV even came out with the show "Unplugged" which was nothing but top artists performing their music acoustically!
I also thought Guns and Roses' "Appetite for Destruction" could have made the list. That was such a big album, that when their second album (or should I say albums) "Use Your Illusion I & II" came out, the record stores stayed open til midnight so people could come and buy it. I know, I was one of those people. I had several friends give me money to pick them up a copy too. And I was not the only person waiting in line at Wherehouse Records (where I actually used to work) come 12 am. I now do much more productive things with my midnight hours, such as sleep, but back in the beginning of the 90's GNR was a big deal!
So, share with me your top ten. Let me know if there is an album you think missed the "Big 30". If you've read this post to this point, you must be into music, and therefore have an opinion. If you blog about it, I will add your link to this page.
